Joal-Fadiouth excursion - Shellfish Island

Between shellfish and heritage

A unique cultural immersion

Departure from your hotel in or near Saly for Joal, the birthplace of Léopold Sédar Senghor, the first president of Senegal. Located at the southern end of the Petite Côte, at the gateway to the Sine Saloum, Joal invites you to discover its history and unique landscapes.

The tour includes a visit to the town of Joal and its artisanal port, considered to be the largest in Senegal - a lively, authentic place where traditional fishing is the daily rhythm of the local population.

You'll then visit the island of Fadiouth, a narrow town built entirely of shells. You'll discover its main street, nicknamed the «Champs-Élysées», its millet granaries on stilts, and its famous shell cemetery, a symbol of tolerance where Christians and Muslims are laid to rest together.

Joal and Fadiouth are linked by a picturesque wooden bridge, and these two villages are the epitome of spirituality, sobriety and unrivalled hospitality.
